He walked over—not to Ruby, not to Theo—but to the vending machine behind their table. He punched in a code slowly, deliberately.
Theo stayed seated.
Ruby’s heart pounded.
Kai retrieved a bottle, turned, and finally faced them.
He looked at Theo.
“Alvarez,” he said casually.
Theo met his gaze. “Kingston.”
Kai’s smile sharpened. “You tutoring now?”
“Yes.”
“Charity work?”
Theo didn’t rise to it. “I help people who ask.”
