Finally, he spoke, his voice tightening with a rare, raw vulnerability. “Cain was always protecting people, Ava. Even when nobody protected him.”
Ava swallowed past the lump in her throat. “You loved him.”
Gabriel let out a short, bitter laugh under his breath, his eyes mapping the shadows of the forest. “We were brothers.”
The sheer volume of grief radiating from him was almost unbearable. Ava looked toward the hidden hatch one last time. Nothing remained below now except ashes, darkness, and fire. Cain was gone.
