“Wha-what happened to them?” I could hear the pride in the driver’s voice. “That’s Alpha’s power, Luna, he can kill a large number of enemies without even needing to touch them.” I heaved a sigh of relief, but it must have been too soon because another wave of people rushed out from the trees. These ones were dressed in grey and had even better coordination than the first batch. Draven fought them off but more just kept coming as if they couldn’t wait to die. Suddenly I stilled and held my breath as I noticed dark grey, almond shaped eyes staring at me. A very large black wolf stood just outside my car door, unmoving.

I have no control over Onyx, he is a force and more like Bastein, he is unruly and broody and only 4 and I can’t help but chuckle as he runs around, with a cowboy hat on and a water gun shooting at the cars. I hear a loud chuckle, and my attention goes to the Alpha King Bête DeLaNuit as he stands there with his hands held up in surrender as Onyx points his water gun at him, but what happens next shocked all of us. Onyx squirts him dead in the face and my eyes widen, but before I can do a thing, King Bête bends over and scoops him up in his huge arms, “I’ll take this one back with me, I can use a boy that is fearless.”

I can't put a finger on it but something is wrong, the two witches seem to be chanting under their breath and the pendants are glowing. “Game on, old man” Enyo says, she shifts back into her small silver wolf that now holds the same white glow as her. Her wolf is small but it is stronger and faster than any other Alpha wolf I have ever seen. They start to circle each other, she snaps her teeth at him.

Assistant Onyx conveyed. "Prepare."

I was used to Onyx that even the thought of having to face Deimon made me shiver in my spot. "Hmm! Did you hear her? She wants me to stay so I'm staying," the playful tone Onyx used made me wonder if they were having a banter inside. "Is he angry with me?" I asked, and my body shuddered again just at the mention of his name. "Let's just say he is not coming out for now, even when he thinks it's weird that you're acting completely different around me compared to him." Onyx said with confidence. Oynx was more open to discussions, unlike his human Deimon. I liked how he was talking nicely to me and also not letting Deimon take over because that would make me uncomfortable.

Suddenly, a dark, heavy rumble echoed inside my head. Onyx, who had been sulking in the darkest, most pathetic corner of my skull for two straight days, finally opened his mouth to speak. "You are a fucking moron," Onyx snarled, his voice dripping with absolute disgust. I wiped a layer of sweat off my forehead with the back of my arm. "Shut up, Onyx." "A moron," my beast repeated, louder this time. "Is this what you saw in those stupid YouTube videos? Is this the great culinary masterclass you were boasting about?"

He was angry, so angry that they were going to leave us and he was hiding what his intentions were from me which was the first clue this was going to hell. He nose-dived, spreading a ring of fire around Alice and Linden who called out and told Terran, and my parents who had arrived, to stay back. They were sure they were fine, and I felt like they were, but Onyx was up to something when he landed heavily before them. "Onyx," Linden boomed, "this is enough now." In a flash, he was cursing, holding his arm from where Onyx bit him. What the fuck? I didn't even know he could bite.

Storm walked up to her but stopped mid step when two more men walked inside the room too behind her, with blank expressions. For a moment, her heart skipped and hairs rose automatically, but she calmed herself down as the three walked further into the room. It was...the men, two of them were the man in the picture, but Storm could not figure out which one was in the picture because these two men standing beside Tasha looked exactly alike. No single difference… Well there are some differences. One looked leaner and his hair was styled in a bun, but aside that…she was practically staring at clones.

What did that mean? I shook Luca’s hand and said hello before Colt finished, “And that is Onyx Bourbon, our top Delta.” When I looked at Onyx I was taken aback for a moment. He looked so serious with those dark eyes and that dark brown hair. He almost looked brooding and angry at the world, yet he wasn’t. He looked at me as if I was the most mesmerizing sight in all of mankind. I moved forward to shake his hand and before I could register what was happening, Onyx had wrapped his impressively strong and soft arms around me and was giving me a hug.

Inside the shield, it was dry, illuminated by the harsh industrial floodlights of the base. Below, in the courtyard, two hundred soldiers were moving in perfect synchronization. They weren't the starving refugees I had saved from the jungle six months ago. They were unrecognizable. They moved like oil. Silent. Lethal. They wore matte-black armor synthesized from the island’s mineral deposits and treated with Mara’s alchemical compounds. They carried weapons modified with Western solar tech and Northern iron. They were the Onyx Legion. And they were terrifying. "We launch at the New Moon," I said, the date hanging over us like a guillotine. "Forty-eight hours."
