COLD STEEL, BLEEDING HEARTS
She looked at Julian, whose face had lost all color, staring at the statue.
"If we’re home," Maya whispered, "who are the two people standing in front of this statue?"
They turned.
By the garden gate were two strangers—a woman with a laptop bag, a man holding a camera, tourists.
The woman spotted Maya and Julian. Her eyes got wide, then she dropped her bag.
"No way," she mumbled. "It’s them. The characters from the book."
She rummaged in her bag and pulled out a real book. The cover showed a silver tree and a red door, titled: THE GHOSTS OF THE INK.
