FLASHBACK to ninth grade. There were multiple middle schools in the area, but only two high schools. Ninth grade year is when Gideon saw his soul mate. Third-Person POV Antonio couldn't shake the feeling that something felt wrong. He hadn't dreamed of Natalina in ages, but tonight, he dreamed of the look in her eyes during their last fight. It wasn't a look of hatred or resentment. All she had done was calmly stare at him, as if she was looking at a ledger that was written off. That calmness unsettled him. He picked up his phone to call her, but two notifications caught his eye. The first was an alert from the Ragusa Famiglia's intelligence network with the headline reading, "The Corradini Famiglia is set to seal a marriage alliance with a Famiglia in Nipalino."

They crash into the wall of the screen monitor, and the screens explode to life, emitting blue light at them. “Look at the screen, Nova!” Gideon's rough voice cracks through the gunfire as the dusty monitors suddenly flicker to life. My breath catches when I see the video playing. Gideon was young, shirtless, and strapped to a cold metal table. His muscles straining against the restraints as he screams: “I volunteer, take me instead. Make me her protector!” The screen monitor suddenly goes blank as bullets rip through the air around us. Gideon moves faster than should be possible, throwing himself in front of me just as two shots ring out.

"No, you're Jenna. You've finally returned." Tears streamed down her face in thick rivulets. "I'm so sorry for letting you suffer for nine long years. But now, you have me, and all my love is yours. You don't need to be afraid anymore. That little wretch is gone. She got exactly what she deserved, just like that monster…" Fear coursed through Anna, making her body quake. She flailed in a desperate and weak frenzy, as if she might crumble into pieces. Mom rose, carrying a bowl of her ever-greasy stew. "Jenna, just drink a little…"

"That bitch needed to die to keep her mouth shut for good. I set the archive fire, and I arranged the helicopter malfunction too." Gavin and I exchanged a look. We had everything we needed. "You raised me to be a fake heiress, and now you're trying to get rid of me too?" Tears welled in her eyes as her voice trembled. Gideon sneered and suddenly grabbed her by the throat. "You were just a pawn. Now, you're useless." At that critical moment, Gavin and security rushed into the room and slammed Gideon to the floor, saying in an ice-cold tone, "Gideon, every one of your crimes has been recorded."

Jogging up beside him we headed further into the trees. We walked for several miles and I side-eyed him in irritation. “Are we close?” He nodded and said, “It's built next to a cliff overlooking a pristine valley with a small waterfall. So when you hear rushing water we will be there.” Tilting my head I listened and could hear birds chirping and felt another presence. Glancing behind us, two red eyes narrowed at me. Startled, I jumped back into Gavin. “Gideon?! Why are you here?” “On orders from the council. Apparently, you two have stirred up the damn high king, and the Goddess says whatever you both did must be rectified,” he asserted.

Gideon also looked restless and wanted to catch up with his friends who had gone home first, but he sighed and leaned back on the sofa with a tired motion. “What's wrong with you?” asked Gavin, shifting the focus of attention. Gideon's face stiffened again and he ignored Gavin by closing his eyes and listening to the surrounding noise. “Kalista doesn't want to sleep in the same room with him,” said Nicko who joined them on the sofa. Gavin laughed at Gideon's rare anguish. A man with a strong temper like Gideon finally melted with the girl who was about to turn nineteen. “What else is she doing?” Gavin asked pointing at Gideon with his chin.
