“No, thanks. You told me you had never been gifted on your birthday besides your mom. This is pity, not friendliness. You broke my heart, Max. We can’t be friends.” He shut the door and left with his friends. Tears stung my eyes. Pity. I’m just going to give the gift back on Monday.

I knew it then—this friendship journeywas going to be a long one. I nodded. He wasn’t wrong. Friends did exchange little tokens of affection, and chocolate—well, I simply couldn’t refuse something that sweet. The bastard knew my weakness and exploited it shamelessly.

“Shut up, Jack. Besties deserve extra special treatment.” Amber smiled, grateful for her friends. “You guys are the best. No one gets me like you do, Mel,” she beamed at Jack, showing him the purple sneakers he gave her a gift. “And here I am flaunting the gift Jack gave me. I’m so happy to have such amazing people in my life.” she hugged Jack, who hugged her back. Melissa grinned mischievously. “That’s what besties are for!” Amber’s eyes watered. “Do I really deserve all this love?”

"I had it all fixed up for you while you were sick, just so you'd be comfortable." I spun around to face him. "Scott, this is a whole lot of money. I don't have this kind of cash to pay you back." He smiled, dropping one of my duffels onto the fresh mattress. "You don't need to, Gabe. Let's just say... I want my cousin's ex to be happy." My stomach dropped, a flash of irritation breaking through my shock. "I am not your cousin's ex," I snapped. He raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, I'm sorry.
