The five of us were trapped inside a magical net capable of nullifying our powers. “Shit,” Aris said angrily. Suddenly it began to shake, and goblins came out of the ground. They were different from the goblins that helped us in the wasteland; these ones looked smaller. Once they were all below us, one of them began to laugh. I knew right away that he was the leader. “This loot is very powerful,” the goblin said. “I wonder what we can do with them.” The goblins started laughing, and suddenly I saw my mother in the background.

She was getting tired of her life, and Gabriel offered her an escape, momentary, but an escape nonetheless. She quickly became friends with his wife, Anabel, and frequented their home almost every day. Her affair with Gabriel started about a month after that. It was thrilling and dangerous, and it breathed life into her. Their encounters were brief and at times right under everyone's noses. They would step out and meet in the laundry room or in the shed of their garden. It was all wonderful and exciting, and lasted for a few months. And then she got pregnant.

One summer there'd been a garbage strike, and the smell of the rotting garbage had reminded him of the smell of a goblin. That couldn't bode well for Billy's future. Why would goblins want to adopt a human child?

His heart skipped a beat at what he saw below. Goblins. There must have been at least a hundred of the foul creatures, running and waving their crude swords and spears. They streamed down from a gap in the far valley wall, some distance West of where Randey stood. Where they had come from he couldn’t imagine. But though he had never actually seen a Goblin, he knew that’s what they were. He’d heard enough tales from his parents to recognize them. Their wild, guttural cries echoed from the valley walls, wafting up to Randey’s horrified ears.

He asked in a teasing manner. She wanted to throw her macaron at him, but recalling Agathus’ warning voice she held back with a frown. Alastair was glad to see that Alexis didn’t return his behaviour with a smile. ‘I should give Agathus that bonus’ he thought with a smile. ‘But more importantly…’ he frowned, knowing how difficult goblin infestations were to control. Countless deaths had been at the hands of those extremely small but strong beings. A goblin was the result of a feral dwarf. They lose their mind and shy away from the sun and then their skin changes colour and they attack any humans on sight.
