“I have to. This storm can’t continue forever. Once there is a break in the weather, I am leaving with my men and ending this.” It shouldn’t have come to this. No, the man waging war on Maatua has skirted those Goddess-defined boundaries at every turn. Alatar the Last. That is this bastard's name. The last of his kind, we’ve been told, and according to his own description of himself, the last thing anyone of us will see before he burns Maatua down to embers.

She has a nasty-looking bruise on her forehead, but she won’t tell me where she got it from. Cheerleader Barbie overhears my comments and gives me a cool smile. “It means you lot need the most work.” My insides tighten at what clearly sounds like a threat. “Work?” I repeat, slowly. “You wanna explain what that means?” “There are five islands, each island for a specific number. The island you landed on is Level 1. The island you are going to is Level 0. Level 0 is for troublemakers who need to have a watchful eye on them.”

"I wish that my body can be revived and that I can live again. I wish that I'll have money. And I lastly wish that I'll be taken far away from here." "CLOSE YOUR EYES AND OPEN IT WHEN I TELL YOU TO. YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF IN A FARAWAY LAND ALIVE AND WEALTHY." Maria does as she was told in all smiles and a great wind begins blowing roundabout her. "OPEN." "Goodbye, Giovanni. Goodbye Jalen. Goodbye King. Goodbye Queen. Goodbye Goddess Alexia. Goodbye, the Goddess of birds." "Goodbye" they all retort and she opens her eyes and fades away.

"Love is a lie." Adrian's words were like an icicle to the heart, but in his trembling voice, I heard something else—despair. [Prove yourself.] [The gods are watching.] [Do you wish to proceed?] [Yes/No] After all they have experienced the past years, the humans felt like they were being rewarded. The majority did not hesitate to select ‘yes’. The young and the bold, those who have dreamed of this from the stories they have read. That wish could give you anything, immortality, infinite wealth, a world without pain." "I don't want any of that if it’s built on the ruin of this Empire," I counter. "I will use my remaining wish if it’s the only way to undo the mistake I made. Can it work?" Her expression turns pensive. "I am not sure. Two wishes of equal power... it is unprecedented.
