Elias rubs his face weakly, “because if that thing is the boundary between worlds… then turning it doesn’t open the crossing.”
My chest tightens a fraction more, because I already know the answer.
Elias looks up at the ridge, and finishes quietly. “It removes it.”
The words settle across the clearing like frost.
The creatures on the ridge begin climbing again, faster this time.
The threads begin tightening, waiting.
For the keys, for the command, for the final turn.
Kasper looks straight at me, “this has always been bigger than you understood.”
