Around me, the Northern line held — axes, spears, shields — a wall of flesh and iron, driving them back, meter by bloody meter.

The crowd suddenly surged, a wave of heat and pheromones signaling the arrival of the Alpha. Vance burst through the front ranks, his chest heaving, his face twisted into a dark, thunderous fury. Beside him, Zebub glided like a bird, her colorful silk dress fluttering. She looked perfect, but to my eyes, the oily rot around her was pulsing with frantic energy.
