I woke to sunlight streaming through massive windows and the sound of birds singing outside. For a moment, I was disoriented. This wasn’t Elena’s cabin. This wasn’t the wilderness. This was luxury: a king-sized bed with silk sheets, furniture that probably cost more than my entire life at Crescent Moon, and a bathroom with a tub big enough to swim in. Blackthorn Pack. Kade. The tiered amphitheater of white marble, designed to make the ruling council look down upon those they judged, was empty. The high-born politicians and wealthy merchants who usually filled the gallery had fled into the lower residential districts, leaving the pristine stone benches abandoned. At the center of the floor stood the Gilded Throne, an ornate seat carved from solid ivory and wrapped in gold leaf, meant to symbolize the eternal light of the South.

“Your Majesty,” a muscular man said, partially kneeling in front of the King to show his respect and utter submission. “Midas,” King Garlow replied, sitting in his own regal seat at the throne hall which was located on the third floor, center of the mansion. He wore a richly embroidered Persian gold cloth with a brilliant vermilion red fur surrounding his shoulder. His head was adorned with an extravagantly-decorated crown of precious stones and diamonds and around his neck, he wore a thick gold-plated necklace with an emerald pendant as its centerpiece. What a gentleman. We walk into the throne room. It’s majestic, covered in rubies and shades of red. Six jewel-studded thrones sit on a dais at the far end of a hall that could fit the population of my hometown inside–it’d be standing room only, but still. Guards line either side of the wine-colored carpet running from the steps of the dais to the far end of the room.

The faint jingle of their jewelry provided a subtle accompaniment to the rustle of their luxurious silken garments, creating an atmosphere of timeless elegance. As the concubines neared the entrance to the chamber, a palpable sense of anticipation tinged with nervousness lingered in the air. The faint, lingering scent of sandalwood wafted from the partially open door, adding a touch of tranquility to the ambience. At the opposite end of the chamber, seated upon a magnificent throne adorned with intricate carvings and swathed in resplendent silks, sat the empress, her dignified presence casting a regal aura over the room.
