Intentionally, I look for something with better comedy than deep story line, I don't want to risk putting on anything that even remotely relates to the shit we're just done talking about. No, it's not because I can't stand movies with characters whose backstories are similar to mine, I watch lots of those kind of movies and I even consider myself good at constructive criticism. You have no idea how fast law enforcement moves when the right buttons are pushed.” He scoffed, trying to mask his unease. “You’re bluffing.” I didn’t bother answering him. Instead, I reached for the remote on the chair beside me and switched on the television. The room filled instantly with the cool, detached voice of a news anchor.

"Oh, I'm just a poor old woman with only my son. We've depended on each other for years. He had a terrible fever as a child. Damaged his brain..." The officers exchanged a look. "Your son has an intellectual disability?" She froze for a split second. "Officer, Benny isn't all there, but he has a good heart. He'd never break the law!" I hovered above them, watching her put on the perfect act. If she hadn't driven me to my death herself, I might've believed her too. Just then, Benny came back. The second the officers held up my picture, he snatched it away before they could say a word and giggled.

V is not even on but why's he staring at it like that? After making myself a steaming hot extra cubes of sugar coffee, I walk towards him. “Are you okay?” I ask. He spares me a glance before shifting his gaze back to the T.V, his fingers interlocked between his thighs. “Do I look like I'm not?” I sit opposite him, silently sipping my coffee, eyes on him. She did her best. “People who’ve never done this think truckers and lone travelers who pick up hitchhikers are all bad, scary monsters,” my mother says. “They watch these murder shows on TV and they think of big ugly men with junk food guts and rusty knives stuck through their belts. They hear about maimed hookers and shallow graves. Most people like to believe the worst, especially if it’s about something they’ve never seen up close.”
