Nora's POV The bookstore always felt different after midnight. The daytime noise, the scrape of chair legs, the low chatter, the soft thud of books being shelved and drained out of the place like water leaving a tub. What remained was the low hum of the fluorescent lights, the occasional sigh of the heating vents, and the dry, sweet smell of paper that had been waiting on shelves longer than most of the customers had been alive. I had worked the late shift at Hollow & Page for almost fourteen months, and I still noticed the quiet the moment it settled.

Every hair on her arm stood as she beat back the panic welling in her breast. On the other hand, she had read novels in which the lady had enjoyed the pirate’s passionate kisses. The heroine in the book actually fell in love with the ruthless man. Isabelle rolled her eyes. It was beyond her knowledge how any woman could feel that way. Yet, Hawk had been attentive while she was being jolted atop his horse. It had seemed he almost cared about her discomfort when offering to have her lean against him.

I didn't know why but out of all the boys in school, my heart decided to fall for The Decadence of The Fallen's "Ice Prince" and lead vocalist. A nobody falling for the most popular boy in school had to be the greatest cliché of the century. A sort of cosmic joke that the universe decided to play on a mere mortal like me. And everyone in the whole universe seems to be laughing but me...

"Sam, don't let go! Hold on, I'm going to fall! Ah…! I'm falling! Sam! Catch me!" When I walked in, I finally saw what was happening. Samson was helping Celia learn to ride a bike out in the yard, holding her steady as she wobbled along. In the end, Celia shrieked, fell off the bike, and tumbled right into his arms. "Sam, am I really that stupid? Why can't I get the hang of this after so long?" Samson's voice was gentle. "You'll get it. Just keep practicing." Celia's smile was radiant. "Sam, you're the best!"

Finally satisfied, I grabbed my book bag, its straps slightly worn from overuse, the fabric decorated with enamel pins of my favorite anime and video game characters. With a deep breath, I turned toward the door. It was time to face the day. I sighed dramatically, dropping my book bag onto the couch. “I see you took all morning to get ready.” Abigail smirked, twirling a strand of golden hair between her fingers. “And I see you just rolled out of bed and threw on the nerdiest thing you own.” I clutched my cardigan in mock offense. “Excuse you, this is peak comfort and self-expression.”
