Leonel's blood stopped, his breathing and his whole system stopped working for a second. "She was murdered," the detective continued. Leonel was slowly receiving the impact of this terrible news. "Where and how?" Leonel's words came out under pressure. "Shot in the heart. They used a silencer and it was at point-blank range. Her body was found in a hotel." "Where? Which hotel?" "In a cheap hotel south of Albany. A woman called 911 for help, I could hear the recording. The voice sounded urgent; the call came from Elizabeth's cell phone. The woman gave the address of where she was, but not her name. This seems to be a trap."

Catherine inquired. "No news," I replied. That's when Catherine told me about Grace and how her situation mirrored Julie's—their cars were found in the same spot. "What was the last book Grace read?" I inquired. "Lost Lycan," Natasha answered. That jogged my memory. I had given that same book to Julie. I'd picked it up from an aisle in the store because its fresh release status and the intriguing blurb had caught my attention. "Do any of you have a copy of Lost Lycan?" I asked.

"What makes you say that?" The book ended with all the mysteries unraveled, and the clues pointed toward the physics teacher. He used his expertise to pull off the perfect crime, and the narrative made it clear he was the murderer. Sam wanted to confirm if the physics teacher was actually the murderer. At that moment, Mindy studied him intently. Sam continued, "I recall a few subtle clues in the book…" First, the shadow on the staircase seemed off. Then, there was the missing murder weapon. Although the police eventually recovered it, the book never explained how it disappeared.

The words landed harder than they should have. She looked away too quickly, her pulse suddenly uneven for reasons that had nothing to do with the investigation. Damian had this frustrating way of saying things like they were simple facts instead of dangerous confessions. Quinn parked the car without replying.
