Goodbye In Her Eyes Novels & Stories

"Nath is going to cry when he sees you. Guaranteed." "I don't want him to cry," I say. "I want him to be happy." "He'll be crying because he's happy, you idiot," Blair says, laughing. "Happy tears. The good kind." She adjusts my veil slightly. "I'm so glad you're my maid of honor," I tell her. "I'm so glad you asked me," Blair says, her eyes getting misty. "After everything that happened, after I pushed everyone away, you never gave up on me. You kept showing up. Kept checking in. Even when I was at my worst."

I heard the voice saying. That was when I felt her grip tightening on my hand. And my grip was losing her hand. I started letting her hand go, the way I promised to do. I was looking at her eyes, looking for a reason. But they were empty. I couldn’t analyze her at all. And then I let her hand go forever. I whispered one last time: “Goodbye, Peanut.” I couldn’t break the eye contact, because it was giving me hope for her to say something, anything! But there was silence. I looked intently at her eyes. It would be the last time that I was seeing her mesmerizing hazel eyes. It was making my heart ache. Yes, her answer depended on my departure.

For the 13th time, an AI-generated photo pops up on my feed, showing my best friend, Gwen Spalding, and my boyfriend, Andrew Gunnell, wrapped in each other's arms. Gwen's still a mess after getting dumped so suddenly, so I assume she's mixed Andrew up with someone else again. Then a comment stops me cold. "I was there. Joyce tried to brush it off before and claimed the picture was AI-generated, but let's see her deny this! Besides, look at them. A guy as hot as Andrew belongs with a knockout like Gwen. They look way better together." Attached to the comment is a candid photo of Gwen and Andrew wrapped in each other's arms, in the exact same pose as the picture on my feed. I screenshot t

My eyelids flutter shut, and for a few prolonged seconds, I pretend this isn’t a goodbye. My hands tighten against her cheeks as I keep her close to me just a little longer. She pulls away, and I hate how swollen and red her eyes are from all of the crying. “Goodbye, Cal.” She steps out of my grasp and walks to the plane. I count every step she takes away from me. With each one, I hope that she turns around and tells me she’s changed her mind. If she just asked me to get on that plane with her, I would.

Suddenly, he started feeling sorry for her. He said he'd never met anyone so upbeat and positive while dealing with something so devastating. From that point on, there was something different in his eyes whenever he talked about her. At first, I didn't think much of it. After all, Carl and I had been married for six years and shared countless days and nights together. I'd stuck by him while he went from being a nobody to a well-known OB-GYN. I thought Wendy was just a passing thing in his life—until I saw that cold look in her eyes whenever she looked at me.

She couldn't even believe it to shed tears on his farewell. She was sitting beside him without any emotion in her eyes. Her honey brown eyes were blank and hollow which showed him a glimpse of himself in her. Her face was masking as his and he could feel that he was watching a female version of himself. When she trailed her eyes up at him he couldn't speak for a while and kept staring in her hollow lifeless eyes as if her soul was drained out.

A ghost. My reflection barely visible in the glass. Scarlet eyes watching. Watching back. Unblinking. Unforgiving. Her lips form a name. A whisper. A farewell for a name I will never call out again. The word falls like a tomb's final stone. Sealing everything away. Forever. “Goodbye, Nicoli.”

In that heart-wrenching moment, she longed to utter her final goodbyes, but the cruel hand of fate silenced her voice. Her eyes, filled with love and sorrow, locked onto Harsh, conveying a myriad of unspoken emotions in their final exchange. As her eyelids slowly descended, a sense of peace washed over her tormented form, her soul departing from its earthly vessel, leaving behind a world shattered by violence and loss.

So I do. Gods, I do. Then I lean in. ~~ When we break apart, her eyes are wet. "Was that goodbye?" she whispers. I don’t answer because I don’t know.

My voice was courteous and distant. “Long time no see.” His lips quivered. He had a lot to say. Lorenzo was dying to express the regret that consumed him in the last three years. He wanted to let me know about the void in his life since he kicked Ginna out. He was just a shell of his former self as he took a detour after work just to get to my former stop at the subway station and scour the crowd for a sliver of my silhouette. All he wanted was for me to look at him, even just one more time.
