Novel & Cerita Goodbye Summer 2019

I looked up to see the sky, clear and blue as always. It was a perfect day, with a soft breeze playing with the clouds. I smiled and, without a second thought, I deleted Ruby's message and blocked her number. Then I stood tall and walked out the door. Time was racing by. I strode confidently into my future.

I couldn’t bring myself to finish the sentence. I wasn’t exactly quiet about it either, so Joanna, standing not far away, heard every word. The girl who had been laughing just moments ago suddenly had tears in her eyes. “Rue, I know you don’t like me, but we’re all friends. Do we really have to end the graduation party like this? Forget it,” she sniffed. “I’ll leave, okay? There’s no point staying here where I’m not wanted.” She stomped her foot and turned to go. Dean immediately chased after her and stopped her.

In the middle of all the voices and celebration, I quietly said, "I do." A month later, on an ordinary night, Dwayne and I lay tangled together in bed. A call came in from an unknown number. I picked it up without much thought. Brandon's voice came through. He sounded sick, his voice thick. "Congratulations on your wedding." I lifted my eyes slightly. "I don't need your well wishes." His voice grew heavier, like something was breaking inside him. "I'm sorry." I hung up. It was too late. The next day, the news reported that Brandon had jumped to his death.

"Ugh, it reeks here. A little perfume never hurts anyone, right?" Zayden's cough turned into a fit, his face going ghostly white. "Stop... Please stop... I'm allergic..." I dashed to grab the perfume bottle, but I was too late. Zayden was already gasping for air, his lips a frightening shade of blue. "You fool!" The guy with glasses exploded in rage. "If anything happens to Mr. Lynch, you'll have the whole country on your back!"

"Good. Whether it leads anywhere or not, call it and try. Who knows, maybe it'll help us confirm who she is." Her colleague fiddled with the phone excitedly, then shook his head, a little wistful. "I've got a feeling this girl didn't come from much. Her phone's an old model, years out of date, and buffers if you try to watch a video on it. Usually, it's girls like that who come to the city to work. God only knows how her family's going to take the news once they find out." I turned my hopeful eyes on my mother. Right, Mom? Knowing I died like this, so horribly, would you feel even a little bit sad?

When news got to my mother that I called the wedding off with the intention to break up with Lorenzo, she looked at me and sighed. “It’s for the best. You aren’t right for each other.” Fighting back the tears, I nodded. “That’s true, Mom. We are not a good fit.” Once my mother was gone, my phone lit up. Gianna sent me a brief video clip. In the video, Lorenzo lay in a hospital bed, his right arm bandaged up and his face pale.

"Gina, stop enjoying yourself. If it weren't for you, none of this would have happened. And I'll tell you this right now. Even if I get back on my feet, even if you begged me, I wouldn't take you back." I glanced down at Rebecca's hand on my arm. "Let go." "I won't. I'm going to say exactly what I—" "I said, let go." Something in my tone stopped her. She released my arm without quite meaning to, thrown off by whatever she saw in my expression. Then a voice sounded just behind me. "Ma'am, your parents are ready for you. It's time to go up."

I had fought cancer for eight years. I had waited for Liam for eight years. My greatest wish had only been to see him one more time. Now I had. That was enough. Goodbye, Liam. I love you.

The next day, the trio caught a flight to Merrington. They spent the whole day checking out the place and only thought about dinner in the evening. While they were chowing down, Hugo got a message from his manager. "Hugo, bad news. Summertime Sadness is kicking off in two days, so you need to haul back home pronto and forget about your vacation plans." Hugo was thrown off by that message. He rubbed his eyes to ensure he wasn't mistaken. "Alan, you're not kidding, right? Wasn't Summertime Sadness supposed to kick off after New Year?"
