The spines have raised bands and are lettered in gilt. One isAlice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the other isThrough the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. Both the copies bear a dedication: ‘Margaret Evelyn Hardy from the Author, Christmas 1871.’ One of them contains a piece of paper that explains their origin.

Clara was just a girl who isn’t so bad and different, she wasn’t like Katherine, and I had only shouted at her whenever I met her. I accessed her dressing. “Why did you dress this way?” My question seemed to surprise her as she raised her head to look at me. She must be thinking I will brush her off this time too? “It wasn’t for you though.” She told me honestly and I smiled, at least she wasn’t like the other ladies who would say they dressed just for a guy. “I have heard a lot of people talk about me always dressing like a tomboy, so I decided to prove them wrong by changing my outfit.” She smiled while adjusting her dress.

I decided to read first the children's book entitled A dancing Glass Shoes. Once upon a time, there was a little girl who dreams to be a ballerina. All-day and night she practised dancing like there is no tomorrow. Other kids think that she's crazy to dream such high because in the first place the little girl can't dance well. I flipped the book to read the next line. One day after the little girl went back to their house from the school. The little girl notices glass shoes at the garbage can near at their neighbour house. She picked it up and wear it. Not knowing that the glass shoes has a curse.

Fair. Apparently being a baby wasn't a valid excuse. Reasonable honestly. Several minutes later she disappeared. God. Then returned carrying an alphabet book. Fair. A very large alphabet book. Reasonable. The kind usually intended for children who could sit upright. God. Not babies who occasionally sneezed at random. Fair. Then Lily sat directly in front of Peanut. Reasonable. Opened the book. God. And school began. Fair. "A." Reasonable. Peanut stared. God.

Lily's hands trembled slightly as she entered a bookshop just off Bond Street. The dark-rose gown and yellow-gold cloak she wore made her feel out of place amid the shanty shelves and dusty tomes. Motes of dust danced and swirled in the beams of light cutting through the windows and illuminating the gilded spines of the books stacked thickly behind her.
