Candles flickered in rusted iron holders along the walls, their flames dancing weakly and throwing long, distorted shadows that made the broken pews look like rows of silent, accusing ghosts. The air was heavy with the scent of damp wood, melting wax, old incense, and something sharper underneath, the unmistakable tang of fear, desperation, and long-buried rage.

In my absence, Charles had taken good care of this place. The interiors of the castle were just as impressive as the exterior, with grand halls and spacious rooms that are tastefully decorated. However, the decor was more gothic and macabre, with an emphasis on black and red colors, as well as intricate carvings of bats, skulls, and other ominous symbols. Dark wood paneling covered the walls, carved with symbols I didn’t recognize. A massive bed dominated one side, its posts reaching toward a ceiling painted with scenes of hunts and battles. Candles burned in holders shaped like reaching hands, their flames casting dancing shadows. Heavy curtains blocked out the moonlight, making the space feel like a cave decorated by someone with too much money and too little humanity. Gothic. That was the word. I stopped dead in my tracks at the monstrosity before me. It like an ancient British estate, with a manicured lawn labyrinth-ed by forbidding trees. Through the tangle of forest, a huge Gothic mansion sprung from a horror novel. It looked like Bluebeard's castle, made of dark wood and stone. The windows wept open; gargoyles yawned on the eaves. The terrifying music came from within, and I could have sworn a skeleton with a flute flashed past a window.
