Gracie said with a giggle. “Ok I'm going to run to the store, I’ll be back shortly.” Paxton calls to Delilah, he opens the door for the dog to get in and then gets in his car. He drives a new silver model, Mustang. Gracie soaks in the serenity of the beach as Paxton departs, enjoying time to herself with dog. She decides to do some yoga before lunch while Paxton is away. He seems to be taking a while. About an hour has passed. Gracie resumes watching the waves and smiles as she thinks of making a sand sculpture. She gets down on the sand and begins making a few starfish, then a marlin. While the artsy lady makes her sand art, Paxton returns. Gracie has not started cooking the tacos yet. Pax

he said all giggling, pulling me to the ground. Overwhelmed by joy, I laughed out loud and spent the next 60 minutes with him building a sandcastle that had towers, a ditch with water around it, and even a bridge that could be raised or lowered. How he did that was surprising. The grains moved with intent, responding to Ever’s small hands as though they were listening.

Chapter eighty-one. The sun had begun to sink slowly into the horizon, painting the sky with warm shades of orange and pink. The ocean waves rolled gently onto the shore as the children continued playing happily in the sand. Princess and Soo-Jin were busy decorating their sandcastle with small seashells they had collected, while Peter proudly stood nearby, pretending to be the “guard” of the castle. “No one can destroy our castle!” Peter announced proudly. Princess giggled. “Peter, you’re too small to guard it.”

Since mistakes weren’t tolerated, I felt like I couldn’t be myself. As we came around to the side of the mansion, I saw a massive sand sculpture right there on the beach. Bridget ran to it, then threw her arms out, and spun around. “Elva!” she called. “Look what I made you!” Elva gasped, then tugged me forward. We rushed toward the sculpture, which I realized as we drew closer, was an elaborate sandcastle. It was multi-leveled, with towers stretching even taller than Elva. Each tower had winding stairs down the sides that led to a main, large building with carefully carved windows. Every detail was meticulously designed and crafted, even down to the brick façade that covered the entire sculp

The two drags me to their sand pit, showing me their half-finished sand castle in progress. “Help us finish our princesses’ castle.” The two-seat on their sand pit. I settle on one edge, holding one of the pails filled with sand. “Sure thing. We’ll make the best one yet.” The two kids grin happily as they clap their hands. They fill the empty pails with sand, while I morph the unstructured sand towers into the crowns. The sisters are mesmerized by the way I make their simple work kick up a notch. As we altogether place a flag on each of the three tallest towers, Kali and Kacy give me an approving smile.

Vince was sitting beside her, his usual calm expression softened by the slightest smile as he nodded in agreement. They had really worked hard on that sandcastle, and it showed in the picture. The castle was detailed, with little towers and walls. I remembered how focused they both were while building it, lost in their own little world. We had just left the resort earlier, and now, we were looking through all the photos from our spontaneous vacation. There were family pictures, lots of stolen shots taken by the resort staff, and even a few goofy selfies. It was nice to look back at everything we’d done over the past few days.

Jack asks if he can get a Naughty Shirley Temple later. When he sees I haven't noticed it yet, Noah points me toward the center of the room where the food is. I gasp. The centerpiece is a giant sandcastle. It is an almost perfect replica of the one we built so long ago. It's beautiful. I step closer and realize that there is more to it than just the towers and seashells, though. The moat is shallow and filled with some sort of glass to make it look like water. Swimming through the glass are sharks made of sand. Lemon sharks.

"Alright, where's this masterpiece?" Lucus and Clary exchanged looks with each other before each taking a step to the side, revealing their sandcastle behind them. "Ta da!" they yelled in unison as Emma gasped. The sandcastle consisted of four little towers with walls connecting them. The shells Lucus had been collecting earlier dotted the top of the wall, with a larger shell pressed into the top of each tower. Seaweed was artfully draped on top in lieu of vines, and an HY was engraved at the front. A little moat had been dug around the castle with a tunnel leading all the way to where the water hit, allowing water to surround the castle. All in all, the castle really was an amazingly crafte
