They weren't the teenage skaters. They were older, wearing filthy, grease-stained jackets. Their faces were gaunt, their eyes manic and glassy. Tweakers. "Excuse me," I muttered, stepping to the right to bypass them. The taller man shifted, blocking my path entirely. He offered a jagged, yellow smile. "You shouldn't be walking around this early, sweetheart. Lots of creeps out here."

I glared at the crowd of people who'd been my family for the first 20 years of my life, now threatening and beating me up all for the sake of an outsider, and felt my heart turn to stone.
