Slowly, deliberately, I opened it. Greek mythology. My breath caught. The cover was glossy and new. I flipped it open, the pages crisp beneath my fingertips, the scent of fresh paper and ink rising up, familiar and comforting. Only Damian knew. Only Damian knew how I’d always lost myself in these stories, gods and mortals, tragedies and triumphs, flawed heroes and inevitable endings. How I found comfort in myths that never pretended happy endings were guaranteed. A warmth spread through my chest, tender and bittersweet all at once.

~ Eternity finishes. I just barely suppress the reaction of my mouth dropping open in shock. It sounds like a freaking telenovela! But I guess even celestial beings have jealousy and rivalries. Just look at the Norse God myths. There’s jealousy and back stabbing throughout their supposed history. I adjust myself as I refocus back onto Giselle.

’ He sniffled. ‘Maybe I can find a way to fix that, too,’ I muttered, scanning the pages of an ancient, dusty book I’d found buried in Moon Chasm’s library. I didn’t find anything. There were old fairy tales, so old they barely seemed recognisable anymore, that spoke of affronted gods casting down their children and making the first wolves. Some were classic tales, like the one about three pups going too near a river and being turned into toads to save them from drowning; others were cautionary tales, warning young wolves away from humans and forbidding any sort of romances between us and them – all in a fun, rhyming sort of way, of course.

For that… could kill them. The little orphans of the slums bundled together, a hand for each ear. They remembered the old myth and deemed it the cause. It was one of the oral folktales of Antacast, passed from one generation to another. The demigods of lightning and thunder fighting again for the wind goddess’ favor, as the old tales had told.

Skye’s eyes went wide. Reyan smiled and continued climbing up. "There are many varieties of gods... the moon goddess is only one of them." He started. "Greek, Roman, Japanese, Philippine, etc. to name some." He said. "Some of them may vary from one another, but most of them are just the same." He explained. “Just that they have different names and forms.” He told him. "Err... I don't think I can follow it completely." Skye muttered, puzzled.

It was an old book with a dark green cover, embossed with gold scrolling around the edges and on the binding, with the title “The Goddess’s Tales” right in the center. Despite its age, it was still in wonderful condition, with hardly any deterioration.

“My friends, our journey is long. Let’s save this for another day, would everyone agree?” After a pondering pause, all heads nodded in agreement. “Now, I have a story to tell.” He scooped a blue powder and tossed it into the bonfire. “Once upon a time….” The flame burst again, but this time, fiery images of animals, humans, and landscapes appeared. From the Greek heroes like Perseus and Jason, the adventures of Thor and Loki, and to the African spider god, Anansi, which was our first time hearing it, every story he told was brought to life by the flame.

He gave me a soft smile, making me return a shy smile. “You know, in Greek mythology, Althaia was the Queen of Calydon, and a woman of fierce passion. She is celebrated in an ancient story about the fate of her son, Meleager. When he was born, the Moirai, or the Fates in English, came to foretell his future, and they predicted he would die as soon as one of the sticks in the fireplace burned out completely. When Althaia heard that, she pulled the stick from the fire, put the fire out, and hid it in a safe place.”

'Myths are different than fairy tales or legends. Legends are stories based in history and are more or less true. Myths, on the other hand, are stories containing a deeper truth—stories that transcend time. My father’s eyebrow shot up in a horrified expression, his mouth twisting in disappointment. “Now, Callista. I know that all of these movies now days focus on Zeus and the Olympian gods and goddesses but you cannot tell me that you never paid any attention when I spoke to you and your brother about the other aspects of mythology. Greek mythology doesn’t revolve around the titans versus the Olympians.” my father’s voice went into his lecturing tone and I had to force myself not to zone out like I did under the usual circumstances. “I’m sorry I didn’t pay attention Baba, I truly am. Please can you teach me about Morpheus?”
