As Elena and Aleksandr worked to disable the drones, a sudden noise behind them made them freeze.
“Well, well,” a familiar voice drawled.
They turned to see Hawthorne himself, flanked by heavily armed mercenaries. His calm demeanor and smug expression sent a chill down Elena’s spine.
“You’re persistent, I’ll give you that,” Hawthorne said, his eyes scanning the drones. “But you’re also predictable. Did you really think I wouldn’t anticipate your next move?”
Elena raised her weapon, her aim steady. “It’s over, Hawthorne.”
He chuckled, unperturbed. “No, Elena. It’s just beginning.”
