“You don’t take orders well, do you?” “Only from people worth listening to.” That earns a grim smile. “Then I guess I’m coming.” Maeven wipes blood from her face with trembling hands. “If she’s hurt, she’ll need me.” The Maze groans around us, walls slick, pulsing faster. The air stinks of copper and rot. I push forward, forcing a path through the living corridors, Kael and Maeven close behind. The tunnels narrow until we’re crawling on hands and knees. Blood seeps from the walls, warm against my skin. Every breath tastes metallic. The whispering starts again, low and hungry.

Alerion took the lead, gliding through the narrow paths. “This is a trap waiting to happen,” Caius muttered. “There’s no way they’ll let us walk through this without something screwing us over.” As if the walls heard us, the ground beneath us started to crack and quake. A loud grinding noise echoed through the maze as massive stone slabs began to slide together, closing off paths. “Shit, RUN NOW!” Lysander barked. We bolted, dodging and running through the rapidly shifting maze. My lungs burned with pain, but I forced myself to keep going. A wrong turn could mean getting crushed between the moving walls.

"Zergs have corrosive blood! Their shells are hard! They are immune to bullets! Normal people can't kill them!" "Can or can't, we'll see after I try," I say, eyeing the joint between the monster's head and body. I kick off the wall, launching myself into the air. "And who said I was normal?" The Zerg opens its mandibles. I catch its antennae mid-air and swing myself onto its back. I flip the axe in my hand. Thwack. I drive the blade precisely into the gap in its neck armor. I hold onto the handle for dear life as the monster thrashes. I twist the blade. Green slime sprays out. I dodge to the side, avoiding the corrosive splash. Below me, I can feel the axe handle melting from the acid.

We were actually going to win. "Put it in your bag," I told him. "We leave right now." Gaius reached out. He grabbed the heavy red book. He lifted it off the stone pedestal. A loud click echoed from the floor beneath the pedestal. It sounded like a heavy iron lock snapping shut. I knew that sound perfectly. I heard it in the silver mines right before a tunnel collapsed. "Run!" I yelled. The ground shook violently. A terrible cracking noise came from the ceiling. Gaius shoved the red book into his leather bag. He turned and ran toward me. The young scholar ran right beside him. They reached the door and squeezed through the opening into the dark tunnel.

The reflection leaned close, whispering so low only Brann and Kael could hear. “But breaking… would feel so good.” The rune-wall convulsed again. The cracks widened further, jagged and greedy. Something else pressed against the breach from within, desperate to escape. Three doubles stood in the chamber, and a fourth was clawing its way free. Liora’s knees buckled, tears streaking her face. Her whisper trembled into the heavy silence: “If it’s me next… I don’t want to see it.” Kael clenched his fists. His chain burned hotter, a brand seared into his flesh. The labyrinth wasn’t finished. It wouldn’t stop until every one of them was broken. ☠️ End of Chapter 22

The creature recoiled for a split second, distracted by the alien energy. That was the only opening we needed. Ava grabbed Misha’s arm, and we scrambled back, plunging deeper into the cosmic graveyard, the skittering sound of the time-eater echoing in our minds. We didn’t stop running until our lungs burned and the horrifying presence finally faded behind us, leaving us breathless and terrified in the oppressive silence of the God-Eater’s Maw.

**This is the third book in the Guardians Next Generation Series. It can be read as a standalone book but will have references to events that occurred in Shattered Bonds. “It feels so eerie. I remember reading about them in Hound’s book,” whispered one of Gazier’s trusted soldiers, standing far enough away that their new companions couldn’t overhear. “What did the book say to do about them?” “They were supposed to die to the moths,” Gazier replied, a wry twist to his lips as he knotted a frayed lace on his dirty boots. “WHAT?” The soldier’s voice nearly echoed in the hushed, abandoned office building they had chosen as a temporary sanctuary. Four floors high and cluttered with ancient desks and toppled chairs, it felt marginally safe so long as they remained quiet. “Then why are they here—alive?”

CHAPTER 31 JORDAN “Graylin texted me.” My hands trembled with rage as I sieved the flour into the bowl. “Yeah? What did he say?” Maze shrugged, wiping off the counter before turning to face me. “He said he's sorry for hurting me,and that he has broken things off with Savannah and wants me to come back to him.” I swallowed painfully. “He was at the office earlier,I beat him up.” I don't know what I was expecting,but Maze's grin threw me off guard. “Good.”

Those disturbing images raided my brain, repeating like my grandmother's broke track record. Nausea swirled unrestrained in my empty stomach. My heart felt like my blood had become tar as it struggled to keep a steady beat. A black cloud hung over me as if rain on my sorrow down on me where I went. I know Liam is a guy who has his needs but does he go around messing with every girl he sees? I'm on his checklist of girls.
