Where eyes should have been, there was only void. “The Moon Throne will not accept her easily,” the voice said. “It doesn’t need to,” the man replied. “It only needs to break her at the right moment.” A pause. Then the voice asked, almost curiously, “And the Guardian?” The man finally closed the book. “The Guardian will protect what it believes is the balance.” “And if it learns the truth?” For the first time, something like emotion crossed the man’s face. Cold amusement. “Then we make sure it learns the wrong one.”

I continued searching the book, barely listening to what she was saying. “Yes!” I squealed, throwing one hand in the air. “I have seen it.” Jada looked at me with eagerness, wanting to hear how we could get the blessings from the guardians. I read the lines carefully. “The guardians may refuse to give you their blessings if you have an evil heart, if you've killed an innocent person, or if you…” My breath hitched in my throat as I only read the last part but didn't say it aloud. I was guilty of that part and could now see why the guardians abandoned me.

A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth before disappearing almost instantly. “It won’t last.” I hated how relieved that tiny expression made me feel. I crossed my arms. “Fine. Kael. Start talking.” The wind shifted between us, colder now. “You know the story they tell about the Guardians?” he asked. I nodded slowly. “They’re chosen to protect the balance between creation and ruin.” “That’s the version meant for children.” Something uneasy twisted in my stomach. “What’s the real version?” Kael’s gaze lifted to mine again. “The Guardians were never meant to destroy ruin,” he said quietly. “They were created to contain it.”
