Chapter Twenty-nine Hunter’s POV I sat in my office, staring blankly at the papers scattered across my desk. The events of the past few days had hung in my mind, and I couldn’t seem to know what to do... which was abnormally odd. The door creaked open, and I looked up to see Gaius, the pack’s physician and my late father’s old friend, stepping into the room. “Hunter,” Gaius greeted, his voice warm yet heavy with something on his mind. “I hope I’m not disturbing you?”

When Gus heard this, his expression changed, but he quickly regained his composure. “Mr. Fox, I don’t know who Wilhelm Proud is, and I have no connection to him,” he said calmly. Dustin was displeased. He knew Drake’s information was accurate. Gus was pretending to be clueless. “I’ll ask you again. Are you sure you don’t know him?” His voice became more forceful. “Mr. Fox, I wouldn’t lie to you. I really don’t know him.” Gus refused to admit it.

Rome asked, his tone not conveying he was opposed to the idea, just that he was thinking aloud. “The beautiful thing is that my friend is a master of disguise,” Gus said. “He used to be an undercover investigator for Interpol, but he is retired now.” Ella’s forehead crinkled. “How old is your friend?” “He’s much older than us,” Gus said. “He used to be my neighbor when I was a schoolboy, and I would go over every day and let him rearrange my face.” Rome laughed at his misuse of the phrase, but Gus didn’t even blink. “I guess you’re certain we can trust him if you’re suggesting we go there?”

Hunter hesitated for a moment, his jaw tight, before reluctantly releasing his grip on the weapon. The blond-haired man; Manuel, as I would later learn, smirked, seemingly unbothered by the near-death experience. Hunter glared at him, his eyes sharp and unrelenting, before turning his attention to me. “Everyone,” Hunter said, his voice firm. “This is my wife, Anya Steele.” The room went silent.

Gahn, Lupin, and Hunter hovered behind the men, their low growls rumbling like a distant storm. Mr… Bunker Jim, he said, I hunt, but I don’t set traps. Something’s off here, and I don’t like it. You should walk away now, Gahn said, his gaze heavy, before this gets worse for you. What’s a hunter doing at a wolf gala? Lupin stepped closer, his tone sharp. I know what you are, Jim shot back. I’ll prove it. You don’t scare me. With that, he turned and marched off.

As soon as the vehicle stopped, he was hopping out with a medium sized duffle bag that looked to be packed. He smiled and clapped Hunter on the back and handed him the bag. “I grabbed a little bit of everything,” he said. Turning toward Emily, Hunter smiled and held out his hand. “I am so pleased to meet you,” he said with a genuine warm smile. “We were worried that Gabe would never find his mate.”

I nodded to Xavier, he had every right to hate me, and if that made him feel better, then I would take it. I closed my eyes as he raised the knife and waited for him to plunge it deep into my chest. There's a tiny pause, almost unnoticeable, before she says, “Who?” “Please, Arachne. Let's not play dumb.” I grit my teeth. “I'm talking about Gus. The hunter. Helena's brother. The man who has spent years trying to destroy my father. The man who has been hunting me since the day he died.” She exhales through her nose. “And?”

The hunters knew that they were getting close. They crept forward, their weapons at the ready, until they caught sight of Tate standing in a clearing, his massive form silhouetted against the moonlit sky. Without hesitation, the hunters opened fire, their silver bullets ripping through the air and striking Tate with deadly force. Tate came to realize at that moment that he had been on a bad path for so long and barely escaped from the hunters. He went back home to his brother, and Marcus gladly allowed him take back his place knowing that he really had changed.
