Her smile crumbles as if it had been made of dry cement. She lifts a shard of glass telekinetically and plucks it from mid-air. Then she holds the jagged edge to Helios’ throat, scratching him. A drop of blood trickles down his neck, dripping onto the remaining two glasses.
It is then I realize that the red liquid is not wine at all. Rather, it is –
“Blood,” the Sorceress says as if she reads my mind. “This,” she looks at the splashes of red all over the floor, “is the blood of all the alphas who came before you, seeking the Xaél Crystal.”
