Storm-Worn Hearts
I stared at the ceiling until my eyes ached, afraid that if I moved, the spell of Dawson’s sleep would break and afraid that if I didn’t move, the threat would grow fangs.
At some point near dawn, his grip loosened. His arm slid away from my waist slowly, reluctant even in unconsciousness, as if his body was disappointed to lose its anchor.
I eased out of bed.
In the bathroom, I locked the door, an automatic motion now, a new habit fear had taught my hands. I leaned over the sink and took a long breath, trying to make oxygen feel like enough.
My reflection looked like a woman split in two.
