The One I Can't Escape
“We didn’t have time to prepare anything big, and the cake is kind of sad, but—”
“But it’s perfect,” I cut in. “Really. Too much, if anything.”
Lea looks relieved. Jace rolls his eyes but I catch the warmth behind it.
Then, just as they start singing “Happy Birthday,” another voice joins in behind me.
Samantha.
She slides into the booth with her usual effortless charm, adding her voice to the chorus.
When the song ends, I blow out the candles and sink back into the seat.
“I didn’t know it was your birthday,” Samantha says, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “If I had, I’d have brought a little gift. Even something silly.”
