It was an obvious deflection technique, but I appreciated that he tried. “I fall asleep every time I start to read Macbeth,” I answered honestly. “It feels like it’s still written in old Latin or whatever, no matter whether they translated it or not.” Stu snorted, an oddly undignified gesture. “Wait until we’re assigned Epic of Gilgamesh.”

That much was obvious. ‘A Hundred Years of Solitude.’ She was only halfway through the book. It was a heavy one, and she couldn’t understand why she read it before she came back. Night time was perfect for a reading session, so she was reading seriously. Heather was the most attractive when she was quiet, and she drifted to sleep with a book in her hands that night. If there was one downside about night reading, that would be the fact that the reader would fall asleep easily.

Matilda muttered and trailed her hand on the page. Sasha rolled her eyes and wondered what she was looking at. “What the f×ck are you staring at?” Sasha asked and grasped the book from her hand. She stared at it but couldn't recognize a single language on it, and it incredibly bothered her. “I can't understand the language” Sasha complained to Matilda who was staring at with angry eyes. Sasha was almost melted by the intense and raging gaze on her. Sasha laughed awkwardly and silently pushed the book back to Matilda.

But I only shift in my position and flip through the pages of the new non- fiction book I picked last night. I read the book but everything just seems nonsense and nothing seems to be making sense for me. Like I have suddenly forgot about how to read the basic english.

Your fate changes to one filled with luxury and the only thing you can think of is boring books,’ Aria, my coldhearted werewolf chides as I flip through the biography of the first Alpha of the Red Moon Pack even though it is written in ancient Werewolf language and very difficult to read as the alphabets look like runes. “These books are more fun to me than romance books,” I defend with a smile because I feel proud of myself for being able to read such a difficult book with ease, haven taught myself with the materials from the Silver pack when I was much younger.

I went back to the packhouse. Got my grandmother's book. Sat at the desk in the study with Dane across from me and started reading. The charter was dense. Old language in places. Some sections that required Adaeze to decipher. But I read through it systematically the way I did everything that mattered now. Deliberately. Thoroughly. Without skipping the sections that were difficult. It took three hours. I found it near the end. Article Nineteen. Old language but clear enough when I worked through it slowly.

Still as miserable as I was, I could feel it through our connection. The bond pulsed. Ached. Pulled. I shoved my books aside and grabbed my laptop instead. Maybe I could at least catch up on some reading for English class. We were supposed to finish three chapters by Friday. I opened the digital textbook and stared at the first page. Read the same sentence five times without absorbing a single word. Finally gave up and closed the laptop. Three hundred and twelve more hours. The number felt impossible. Insurmountable. Like trying to count grains of sand on a beach.

“Ariadne.” Even the books here were ones I’d already read repeatedly. There were only so many times I could read about the '100 Greatest Battles of Wolf Kind' or 'The Twenty Steps of a Successful Luna' before beginning to hate even the thought of picking a book up. But even if I asked someone to go to the library for me, it was unlikely there would be many books in there that I hadn’t already read at least once. 'Three hundred and eighty-four… three hundred and eighty-five… three hundred and eighty-six….'

The power to be a slave. "It seems very exaggerated. How is that going? What do you mean?" His eyebrows furrowed and paused for a while. "I don't know? This might be a result of reading books." I said and he nodded twice, paying attention to every detail I said. "Darling, in the English language, can you spell the 5th longest wor⁠—" I interrupted him. I closed my eyes, jumbled letters began to flow like specks of pixie dust forming a word. It's like magic but It's not fantasy. It is sensory, a thought experiment. It is science.
