“I’m telling you, staring at that thing all the time won’t make your crush text you back.” “Mom! That’s so rude! I don’t even have a crush,” Dasha snapped, clearly annoyed and a little embarrassed. “I’m just reading stories on Kindle!” “Kindle? Isn’t that the app where all those steamy, raunchy novels are? The ones that make Fifty Shades look like a church sermon?” Aunt Lori said, her tone dripping with suspicion. “Mom! That’s not true!” Dasha protested, blushing as she stabbed at her scrambled eggs. “Kindle is for all kinds of stories, okay? And not all of them are… you know, like that.”

She read her Bible every night, and her other religious books over and over. So she was reading on her Kindle that night when she got his call while hugging the huge pillow of a cute crocodile that came out of the big box he spritzed with his favorite male cologne for her. Like she could stop thinking about him as soon as she stopped being busy with work or she was ready to go to bed. Especially when she was lying on her bed. “So that’s why you asked me my favorite genre and authors,” she told him after thanking him for the gift. “I love it. Really.”

Since then they always come here and play or read my book collection. Luke was currently reading Survival of the Fittest by Jonathan Kellerman. I recommend the book to him saying that he'll like the genre, although I might say that it was a psychological conditioning to help him view the world a little differently, and what I mean is the way I wanted him to see it.

Something was coming and whatever it was, it wasn't good. Lightning flashed in the black sky, giving me enough light and time to see the shadows that moved swiftly in the dark as if they were walking on air. My hand reached for my necklace instinctively. If it came down to the worst moment, I would rip off the damn thing that restricted my powers and use my gifts.

It made my heart flutter to watch him, and in that moment, I forgot we were ever arguing at all. “Well, I couldn’t really decide on what book to get you, since I guess we don’t talk about that kind of stuff very much. But I know you really like books, because I watch you a lot. Not in a creepy way though, I mean, I just notice things—” How sweet, I thought, gazing up at him while he fumbled for words. “Anyway, I thought you should get your pick, you know? Whatever you want. It’s a Kindle, and there’s a lifetime subscription already on it. I figured it would be useful because you’re always carrying around those heavy stacks of books and needing help with carrying them around.”

He sobered then cleared his throat. I smiled. “He was shocked.” It was difficult to believe that Adam was related to Tristan. There was a slight resemblance. Adam came a bit closer and leaned against one of the posts. “I wasn’t sure what kind of books you like, so I brought a memoir, a thriller, a romance, and a fantasy book. We don’t have many new books. I don’t think I’m allowed to give you my kindle. You could use it for other stuff.” I smiled. “It’s okay.” Despite my intention to hate on every Russo, it was difficult not to like Adam. “I think I’ll pass on the thriller, though. I’ve had plenty of thrill in my life recently.”

Instead, he replied with actual books I’ve read before in my first life that he firmly hated. “‘Darkness Within’ is my first recommendation. Absolutely amazing. ‘Death, are you real?’ is also good, as well as ‘The Next Morning’. Those three are my best picks.” I blinked several times, visibly surprised. Earlier events completely shoved to the side as this new discovery of Cassius Silverton reading thriller books had me utterly nonplussed.
