They frantically shift and contort to show me a disturbing scene. A naked and unconscious she-wolf, not my granddaughter, lay panting for her life. She is bound to an altar, unmoving, but she is pregnant. Her belly swells, and above her, I see a hideous man-shaped mess wither and fall to the ground beside the altar. A dark shadow hovers there now with a menacing purpose. “It is done, Sire,” comes a voice of finality. The dark shadow suddenly cackles, ascending back into the moon as the eclipse fades. A shriek leaves me as the image breaks, but no one hears it. I know in my heart that this is the worst thing imaginable. The Shadow Wolf has returned.

My pupils dilate, my vision sharpening, my senses heightening. I gasp, my eyes widen in disbelief as I see the shadow of my wolf spreading across the floor. “No way!” I exclaim, my chest rising and falling. Is that… my wolf in a shadow form? I can feel her presence all over me. She’s awakened—yet hidden. Without hesitation, I rush outside. The sight is gut-wrenching. Rogues tear everything apart, breaking bones, trampling bodies as if they were nothing more than splintered wood. And every time someone is hurt, I feel it deep inside me, like their pain is mine.

🌒 Chapter Nineteen: Between Storm and Shadow The dawn broke cold, fog clinging to the trees like ghosts. Raven stood on the ridge above the compound, breathing in the scent of damp earth and pine, letting it settle the restless wolf pacing inside her. Shadow, it’s time. The shift came smoothly, bones cracking, fur rippling across her skin, her wolf rising to the surface. Shadow was massive, sleek black fur glistening with dew, golden eyes scanning the forest.

My heart is pounding in my ears. “Someone who shouldn’t be here.” The growl grows louder—and then I see it: two glowing eyes in the dark, followed by a figure emerging from between the trees. It’s a wolf, but far larger than it should be. Its black fur gleams beneath the moonlight, and its mouth hangs open, revealing rows of sharp fangs. Shadow growls in return, a deep, threatening sound unlike anything I’ve ever heard from him. He moves like lightning, placing himself in front of the wolf as it advances.

Liam is quick to pull me flush against the wall of the cinema building, shielding me from the hysteria with his body. “It’s a Shadow attack!” Someone shouts, their words causing my body to freeze and blood to run cold. Peering over Liam’s shoulder, I spot two shadows, their tall frames standing at nearly seven feet towering over a she-wolf whose body sported deep, bleeding gashes. The Shadow with long flowing black hair and crimson eyes sneers, licking the blood of the she-wolf from his claws with a forked tongue. “Who would have thought Ottawa would be easy to enter once all the snow began to melt?” His companion chuckles out, his voice distorted with a gurgling.

It had worked in theory. Shadow did not care for theory. My wolf wanted Lyra. A hunger lived in him that I could not feed with Stasia’s soft hands and warm body. Shadow howled in the dark, restless, pointing toward the woman who smelled of ash and rain and old grief. He wanted to heal her. To claim her. To press her into the center of our pack and make them all pay.

I swallowed hard, heart pounding as I fought the urge to call out. And then I saw it…a shadow, darker than it should be, detaching itself from the corner of the room. It wavered for a moment, like a trick of the light, then moved with purpose, swirling closer around my feet. My breath caught in my throat as the darkness stretched out, curling around me, cocooning me in an otherworldly embrace. I knew what this was. I’d seen in the book of supernaturals, whispered stories of creatures that could manipulate shadows…wolves with abilities beyond the norm. I never believed them… until now.

Selena’s POV The Shadow Heir’s voice shook the white space. Not dramatic. Not loud. Just sharp enough to slice the silence like a blade. “You,” he said again. And that’s when I realized— Oh. He wasn’t talking to the glowing man behind him. Nope. He was calling his wolf. His shadow wolf. Because WHY NOT, right? Why stop at being creepy when you can summon a nightmare dog too? The wolf peeled out of his back like darkness untangling itself.

Agony like a searing hot knife slicing into vulnerable flesh ripped through Shadow's heart. He lifted his head and howled, an ear-splitting, agonised howl. the white she-wolf turned on her hind legs and raced into the forest. "We can fix this, Shadow," I yelled through the howling. "But not if we lose her again. She can mind link with us. A part of her has already given itself over to us."
