A shriek leaves me as the image breaks, but no one hears it. I know in my heart that this is the worst thing imaginable. The Shadow Wolf has returned.

I gasp, my eyes widen in disbelief as I see the shadow of my wolf spreading across the floor. “No way!” I exclaim, my chest rising and falling. Is that… my wolf in a shadow form? I can feel her presence all over me. She’s awakened—yet hidden. Without hesitation, I rush outside. The sight is gut-wrenching. Shadow growls in return, a deep, threatening sound unlike anything I’ve ever heard from him. He moves like lightning, placing himself in front of the wolf as it advances.

Liam is quick to pull me flush against the wall of the cinema building, shielding me from the hysteria with his body. “It’s a Shadow attack!” Someone shouts, their words causing my body to freeze and blood to run cold. Peering over Liam’s shoulder, I spot two shadows, their tall frames standing at nearly seven feet towering over a she-wolf whose body sported deep, bleeding gashes. The Shadow with long flowing black hair and crimson eyes sneers, licking the blood of the she-wolf from his claws with a forked tongue. “Who would have thought Ottawa would be easy to enter once all the snow began to melt?” His companion chuckles out, his voice distorted with a gurgling.

It had worked in theory. Shadow did not care for theory. My wolf wanted Lyra. A hunger lived in him that I could not feed with Stasia’s soft hands and warm body. Shadow howled in the dark, restless, pointing toward the woman who smelled of ash and rain and old grief. He wanted to heal her. To claim her. To press her into the center of our pack and make them all pay.

I swallowed hard, heart pounding as I fought the urge to call out. And then I saw it…a shadow, darker than it should be, detaching itself from the corner of the room.
