A wolf, but twisted—its body smoke and flame, its eyes burning red. I stumbled back. “What is that?” “A shadow beast,” Lucien said casually, as though discussing the weather. “Born from your fear. Fed by your blood. Kill it, and you claim mastery over your shadows. Fail, and…” His smile sharpened. “You die.”

There was nowhere they could go that Shadow wouldn’t find them. A big brown wolf came into his view, leaping over bushes and tree trunks to get away from him. ‘I grow tired of this game,’ Shadow declared as he sped up. And then he had the Beta’s hind leg in his jaws. The whines, whimpers, and howls did nothing to faze him as he shook the wolf from side to side and then threw him against a tree trunk. The wolf was obviously stupid because he got up and tried to run again. He had him by his other leg and gave it the same treatment.

His fur rippled like living metal. Even Morana let out a small appreciative rumble. “He is magnificent.” Varin responded smugly. “Obviously.” Rowan’s wolf, Varin, tilted his head at me. “Your turn, Shadow Luna.” Morana’s presence surged in my bones, fierce and protective. “Call me.” I inhaled. The shift swallowed me whole. Fur erupted from my skin, black as deep night with veins of silver flame swirling along my spine. When my paws hit the ground, shadowfire curled around them like a living halo.

While werewolves had quick regeneration for many injuries, some were harder and took longer to heal, and in some situations, some werewolves simply needed to heal faster to return to the frontline of any battle they were in. The pack with the closest ties to the hospital? The Shadow Rock pack, which happened to be the pack her father was currently leading as the Alpha wolf. But I can't just make sense of what it is. The shadow suddenly growls loudly and I feel the building shaking terribly. My eyes snap open and a scream leaves my lips in an instant. Two big black wolves are sprinting towards me with inhuman speed. That's when I realise the growl is from them, not the shadow. One has glowing silver eyes and for a moment, I can't help but think of Knox. The other behind him has glowing red eyes. The shadow on the floor hisses the instant their paws get closer. Then in the blink of an eye, it's gone. It disappears as if it's scared of the wolves.

A group of wolves was gathered around a pile of bodies, feeding on the remains of the humans who had once lived here. The leader of the group was none other than the Dark Wolf, the same wolf that had killed his parents. The Dark Wolf looked up, its red eyes fixed on Shadow. It let out a low growl, and the other wolves turned to face him. Shadow was outnumbered and outmatched, but he stood his ground. "You will not harm another innocent," he said, his voice trembling but determined. "I will not let you." The Dark Wolf smirked, as if amused by Shadow's bravado. "You are young and foolish, little pup," it said.

But those rogue wolves were not easily deterred, their hunger for blood and violence evident in their relentless advance. As my eyes darted anxiously between Louie and the approaching rogues, something strange caught my attention next to Archie. From the shadows of trees, a black wolf emerged suddenly. Its entire form was as dark as night, like a living shadow that seemed to dim the moonlight around it. The shadow wolf moved with eerie silence, taking advantage of Louie's distraction to launch a surprise attack, its mouth aimed straight for his vulnerable neck.
