The farmers were harvesting today, and this breakfast, familiar, and cooked with love, was for them.
Nana Fe was with me, of course. She always was. Her movements were steady and sure, each sound she made, the scrape of the spoon, the gentle hum of a folk tune, filling the room with comfort. And then there was Claire. My dear, hopelessly dramatic cousin, whose idea of “helping” was sampling every dish that came out of the pot.
“Psst, Claire,” I teased as I caught her sneaking another piece of meat. “Are you pregnant? You’ve been eating nonstop.”
