“Transport will be there in ten minutes to move you and the boy to the next location.” “I’ll be ready,” he barked. “ … and I’ll need more painkillers and dressings.”

"We can do it again. If you want. I'm not saying today was good. I'm saying it wasn't the worst thing that's happened this week." Coming from him, I'm learning, that's a standing ovation. "There's a game Saturday," he says, not looking at me, very casual. The way you say a thing you absolutely refuse to care about the answer to. "You don't have to come or anything. I’m just telling you." "I'm coming." "You don't have to." "Elijah." I wait until he looks up. "I'm coming." He nods once and finishes off the last of his burger.

"I'll respond to them and ask for a meeting time, I'll meet with them tomorrow." "That's great, hurry up and get cleaned." I smiled and he nodded before disappearing to do just as he had been told. When he was gone, I plunged into a seat and pulled my phone out just to explore G****e on who Marcello was, since I'd never heard of them. It turned out to be a multi millionaire fashion designer brand with so much to offer. A part of me worried about what this could do to my relationship with Frank but it was too early to think about that.

More listening and his hand gripped the phone harder. "I understand." His eyes moved to me. "Yes, she's here, I'll bring her tonight." He hung up and looked at me and something in his expression had shifted. "We have a problem." "What kind of problem?" I wiped my face. "Bigger than you trapping me in a fake marriage?" "My father has a brain tumor, he's dying, and he has two months to live." Adrian put his phone back in his pocket. "He wants to meet you tonight along with my brother James and his fiancée."

I stopped a few feet away, clutching my leather portfolio like it was armor. “Mason” His eyes lifted slowly, the way someone glances at a mildly irritating delay. No smile. No softening. Just the flat, assessing stare he’d perfected over the last eight years. “What?” I swallowed the acid rising in my throat. “Do you remember what tomorrow is?” His brow creased for half a second, genuine confusion before smoothing out again into indifference. He slipped the phone into his pocket. “Should I?” The question wasn’t cruel. It was worse. It was careless.

“Is it here? Can I see it?” “No, the canvas is outside. Maybe later, after dessert.” A boyish smile lit up his face, and he nodded. He went back to consuming mouthfuls of the food. “Would you like some more?” she asked. He dipped his head while swallowing. “Please.” Isobel rose up from the table. Striding to the kitchen, she dished up another plate. Placing down his copious plate, she pivoted to the speakers by the kitchen counter. “Oh! I love this song.” Isobel scrambled to her phone and increased the volume. Staccato beats of drum and bass filled the room. A man’s soulful voice rang through, singing about a woman’s hips winding for him.

Barrister Joe finished. The judge looked at the four of us and said, “Now that the hearing has taken place, the proceedings for it to be readdressed will begin, and the first meeting is for next week, so see you all by then,” the judge said, got up and walked out of the courtroom. “Next week?!” I practically yelled. Here I was thinking that everything would be deliberated and fixed right here and now so that I could return home fully. Damn, I knew that the choice of including a judge would never work in my favor.

"Then how about I video call you? You're so paranoid." I had planned to start the video call, but if I did, I'd expose my location. I quickly said, "Just kidding. Of course, I believe you. Get some rest." After hanging up, I found myself still caught up in the excitement of spending the night at Lesley's.
