A plume rose up in the air, turning into a cloud of smoke, the dying embers crackling and sputtering out in a moment. The man took a few deep breaths suddenly, as if the air around him did not contain enough oxygen. And then his eyes flew open. I took a step back to see the eyes…or whatever that was. Her eyes flew from one of his to the other, reaffirming his presence. She still couldn't believe it. He was up and well. She dragged her eyes down his form, really looking at him. He had lost weight and that was expected, but knowing him, it wasn't something he couldn't get back soon enough if he wanted. Her eyes met his and she smiled shakily.

The moment he opened his eyes, he was looking at the gazes of people who had gathered around him. He was the last to wake up and that feared everyone present. They waited to hear a reply from him, but gave him some time. He got up with their help as they brought him out of the waters.

I winced as the bright light pierced my eyes, and it took a few blinks before my eyes came back to focus.
