He opened a door, and in a few seconds, I was being laid gently on a very soft mattress then he moved away from me. “Can I open my eyes now?” I asked, bitting my bottom lips as he shuffled around. “Wait,” he said curtly. There was more shuffling while I waited in anticipation. “Open,” he said after a short while. I quickly undid the knot he has made with my shirt at the back of my head, and took it away from my eyes. I winced as the bright light pierced my eyes, and it took a few blinks before my eyes came back to focus.

The world is a sick, twisted place. Days passed. I changed his bandages. I made sure he was warm. I talked to him sometimes, even though he couldn’t hear me. I told him he was an idiot. I told him not to die in my bed. It was messy. On the fourth morning, his eyes opened. Just like that. No warning. They were cloudy at first, then they cleared and focused on me. He blinked. Swallowed. His lips were cracked. “Water,” he rasped, the word barely a sound.

Never! Perhaps it was due to the intensity of this notion that his eyes suddenly flew open. They were no longer dark. Instead, one of them turned red.
