We were entering the season of the hearth, of drawing inward. The cookbook, "Recipes from the Resilient Coast," went to print. The launch party was held in the canoe shed, now strung with twinkle lights and smelling of woodsmoke and Hank’s chowder. We signed copies for neighbors, for Miranda’s grad students, for a few tearful tourists who felt they’d been part of the journey. It was a celebration not of a fight, but of a harvest. Life, in its gentle way, began to present new, small puzzles. Not crises, but curiosities.

He groaned while taking it out of his pocket, and then he started scrolling through it. Nearby, baskets held eggs nestled in straw, alongside bundles of dried herbs that perfumed the air with a sharp, earthy smell. On one shelf, a small stack of codices leaned together, their spines inked in neat runes and gold lettering. Some where—Pharmacology for the Gifted, Healing Through Elements, Herbs, and their Hidden Benefits. My discovery made me recognize that Lucan was a miracle. He was a truly gifted healer. I found medicines tucked into papers and jars. They could last years. Nourishments were also sealed away in enchanted ice that doesn't seem to be melting.

“Here. You may as well make yourself useful.” He laughed but took the potatoes and stepped back again. I walked through the store, past the refrigerated section, and looked at the meats. Freshly packaged steaks were in the cooler, so I took out a package. They were thick and looked luscious, making my wolf’s mouth water. I was going to have to go hunting soon. It had been a while. My wolf started panting happily. I walked around the store and then came to the cookbooks. I opened a white one with recipes of everything from dinners to desserts and started perusing it, looking over the recipes.

“It’s called Poor Girl’s Gold.” They all look at me. “It’s inspired by something my great-grandmother used to make as a dessert when I was a young child. Porridge, condensed milk, and biscuit crumbs. We only got it at her house. It was the best she could do for us for dessert.” I glance around the table. “This is a tribute to that. The beauty of humble things made new. Reinvented, not erased.” “Shall we?” I nod. I hold up the small, gilded jug and they all follow suit.

she added, waving her hand in the general direction of the kitchen. I could hear her snickering at me as I made my way into the house. The kitchen was the room connected to the back porch. The counters were covered in large jars, full of oats and pasta, lentils and other dried beans, as well as two spice racks stood either side of the hob which were stacked with similar jars that were much smaller, and filled with assorted colourful herbs and spices.

The little shoes that the little girl wore squeaked each time she took a step, making a delightful sound. Her little figure seemed to have left a magical effect on Hilda and attracted her gaze. Hilda watched as the tiny figure left while listening to her squeaky shoes until she completely vanished from her sight. The next day, Hilda did not head anywhere as the weather was unbearable for her. She found a recipe book somewhere in the villa with many recipes written for making sausages, braised meat, and pickled vegetables. She wanted to learn to cook all those a while ago so that she would not have to worry much about getting delicious food once she returned to Africa.
