I pulled him toward me, and he came at first but then stopped.
“I don’t think this is the best idea.”
“Well, I do.” I pulled him again.
He climbed into bed but got about a foot away from me. Yep, he was tiptoeing. I turned off my bedside lamp and sank into my pillow. I slid closer to him and laid my head on his chest. I noticed then, for the first time, that his beat was barely there, slow.
“This is the first time I’ve noticed your heartbeat is different..”
“That’s because now you know what to listen for,” he whispered. Silence filled the room. “It’s unbearable, a curse, a plague, it’s hallowed, its damnation.”
