The Heartless Lover

“Here,” I muttered.
Haze helped me force the lid open.
Inside was a family record. Scarface’s bloodline. The kind of thing kept in blood and guarded with knives and a pendent, it was a serpent coiled around a rose.
I grabbed onto the pendent before flipping through the pages — Christian’s name. His brother’s. Their father, mother.
Then I saw it.
Photographs.
Black and white. Faded.
Children.
One image caught my eye — the two brothers standing side by side, stiff and expressionless. And right behind them, a small girl with sharp eyes and thick dark curls.
