Vixen says, kissing her cheek. "You're gonna see mines now?" Harley says, looking up at Vixen. With a smile, Vixen kisses his nose and replies. "Yes, I'm gonna look at yours." he says, grabbing his card. He opens his card to reveal a drawing of five little stick figures of him, Leah, Kai, me, and Vixen and he drew our names above all our heads with a heart in the middle of all of us. "Thank you, bubba. I love it." he says, kissing his head and hugging all of them.

Taking it as a no, Josh did not pick the drawing up, but he was still able to get a good look at it. He could tell that it was a portrait of Zachary. Josh had to admit that Serenity had a gift for art. She brought Zachary’s portrait to life. Only thing was, she deliberately drew a heart outside Zachary’s chest, and it was tiny… Was she saying that Zachary had a tiny heart? Was that a lake or a river behind Zachary’s portrait? There were wavy lines along the shore. What did that mean? There was a ball too. Josh stared at the drawing and then at Serenity. Seeing that Serenity was scarlet on the cheeks and hazy in the eyes, he knew that she was out of it.

“Come see! Ivy walked to Isla! All by herself!” Adrian stood. Picked up Isla. I stood. Took Ivy from Alex. “Show us,” Adrian said. Alex ran ahead. To the house. To the deck. To the place where the door drawing used to be. New drawing. Taped to the slider. Five hearts. Bigger. _Mama. Dada. Alex. Ivy. Isla. Home. Always._ “Alex did it,” Adrian said. Quiet. To me. “Five hearts. He counted right.”

My heart feels heavy. Claire is in her room, drawing. When she sees me, she smiles and holds up the paper. “Look, Mommy! I drew us. You, Daddy, Uncle Harvey, and me. All together.” In the drawing, the four of us are holding hands in front of the house. A yellow sun in the corner. And a bright star in the sky — Sirius. Tears rise again. I sit on the floor beside her and pull her into my lap, holding her tightly against me.

“My name’s Ren.” It took no more than that for the room to soften. The air seemed to shift, as if a gentle breeze had swept through, carrying away the tension. Maris smiled gently, her eyes warm and inviting. “We’re glad you’re here, Ren.” Ren held up her sketchpad, opened to a single page. A drawing: two hearts tethered by thread but spinning in opposite directions. “I drew this,” she said, voice low. “Because I didn’t know how to explain what I felt.”

At the center was a small wooden box he had been secretly working on for weeks. “Look!” he said proudly, lifting the lid to reveal a collection of carefully folded drawings. Emily gasped softly. “Luca, these are beautiful.” He beamed. “I made them for you and Dad. Each one is a story about us.” I knelt down beside him, my throat tightening as I looked through the drawings. There we were, stick figures holding hands, standing under a bright yellow sun, surrounded by hearts and stars. Another drawing showed our home with flowers blooming around it, and in the center, the three of us smiling.

He'd painted a girl. "Is that Mommy?" He shook his head. "It's Crystal." I gasped, wounded. "I thought I was your favorite person." "You are." He flashed me a grin to soften it. "But after Crystal." Mason burst out laughing while I told Lior to cut it out, Crystal had clearly won this round. Then it was my turn. I revealed the two hearts. "Why two hearts?" Lior asked, squinting at my painting. "One heart's for you, because you're my favorite, even if you did pick Crystal over me." I tapped the second one. "And one's for Daddy, because he's a good dad, and he's my favorite too."

“I think you, out of everyone in the world, need one person who can show you how to love again.” “And you think your cousin could do that for me?” she asked as she watched him as he thought about her question. The simple question was more than he had thought it would be. He knew it was two-sided at best. “I think my cousin could help you. I don’t know if it would be the key or not. I do think that he would help open your heart again in a way I don’t think anyone else can. You had someone like him before, so you understand.” Garrett said. “He is alone now. He needs help in life and people to love him back. For you, it may help both of you.”
