Ace chimed in, his eyes shining with pride. I couldn't help but smile at their infectious energy, feeling a warmth spread through my heart. Pushing aside my worries for a moment, I shifted my focus to them, eager to see their creations. "That's wonderful, sweeties! Let me see." I beckoned them closer, and they eagerly rushed over, holding their drawings into my hands. Luna's drawing shown a colorful garden scene, complete with flowers, butterflies, and a shining sun, while Ace's featured a tall tree laden with apples, surrounded by smiling stick-figure people.

I decided not to be too worried and just waited for him in the study room, when a sewing book of his caught my attention and I could help but take it. I opened the book, and it was a drawing book, and it was filled with different things you wouldn’t expect to find in a book, and I noticed that he only drew things he loved. There, amidst the drawings of flowers and landscapes, were the names of his three wives. Each name had a flower and a heart drawn beside it, symbolizing his love for them. I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as I looked at those pages. It was a reminder that I was not the only woman in his life.

He plopped a crayon drawing into Amiriam’s lap. “This is our family,” he declared proudly. Amiriam smiled. The figures were rough, but recognizable—Luke with long arms, herself with curly hair, James smiling with a crown on his head, and two heart shapes between them. Luke studied it, then turned to James. "What are the hearts for?" "One is for now," James replied, "and one is for always." Amiriam blinked. Sometimes children knew exactly how to express the things that adults couldn't manage to ask.

Hearts. When I looked at both of them with wide eyes, they knew I figured it out. But how to... I made a heart with my hands, then a diamond.. The other two were impossible to do with my hands. I put four fingers up and pretended to hand out cards. The brains of Rana and Megera were working hard. They stared at my hands and my face like their skulls were actually cracking. "A deck of cards!" Megera suddenly answered, way too loud. I jumped up and nodded eagerly.

“I think you, out of everyone in the world, need one person who can show you how to love again.” “And you think your cousin could do that for me?” she asked as she watched him as he thought about her question. The simple question was more than he had thought it would be. He knew it was two-sided at best. “I think my cousin could help you. I don’t know if it would be the key or not. I do think that he would help open your heart again in a way I don’t think anyone else can. You had someone like him before, so you understand.” Garrett said. “He is alone now. He needs help in life and people to love him back. For you, it may help both of you.”

She asked him in a small voice. “Take all the time you need. Just remember that my heart only beats for you.” He kissed her forehead.

But that wasn’t what he was drawing today. There was a picture of two girls—rendered crudely in crayon, but still identifiable as girls. One of them had short blond hair and the other had long brown braids. Their hands were on their faces and their mouths open in screams. David had drawn these as big black circles. A huge black shadow hovered before them, a shapeless body with red eyes and clearly defined hands. The hands looked like long silver knives. There were many drawings before this one. Lauren wondered how long David had been at it.

Nicole. “Heidi…” my heart softened as I dropped to my knees beside her. “I’m gonna put them back, I promise. I just wanted mum to stay here for a while.” One of her drawings rested ont he table too, almost covered by mum’s scarf. I pulled it from under there. It wasn’t the best picture but I could tell it was two older women with a child in between them. One of the women’s hair was done with a yellow pencil while the other was black, the child had tiny dots around her head to imitate hair, but what they all had in common was the yellow circles hovering over their heads and the triangle wings.
