The afternoon sun was relentless. Even under the big umbrella by the pool, the heat wrapped around them like a heavy blanket. Elise sat on the edge of her lounge chair, fanning herself with her hand. “This is unbearable,” she sighed. “I swear it gets hotter every summer.” Her mother, Laura, lay beside her with her eyes closed, a thin novel resting on her stomach. “You’re telling me. I can barely move.” Mark, Elise’s stepfather, stood near the pool steps, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his arm. His t-shirt was already damp. “We should’ve just stayed inside with the AC. This heatwave is killing me.”

The “Wave” was a dangerously delightful event. All wolves who had already been claimed and had a partner, regardless of gender, were overcome by an indescribable hunger that could only be satisfied by one thing: sex. That’s why the name “Wave”: it was a state of compulsory heat, a wave of desire, lust, and fire that hit us with full force and drove us toward sex. It could even be dangerous to go without; there were reports of wolves who got sick if they couldn’t mate. They felt physical pain and weakness without sex during that period of heat.

We kissed under the dimly lit streetlight as he leaned against the car, letting me lean onto his body heavily. "Julius," I called out to him, already slurring my words. Upon hearing Julius' response, I murmured his name again. Each murmur earned me a response. He made sure to respond to me every time I said his name. Despite being out in the cold wind, Julius kept playing this dreary game with me, his intoxicated lover. I curled up in his warm embrace, looking as though I were about to doze off any time now. Then, I mumbled softly, "Julius, I'm about to book a hotel room. Do you have the guts to sleep with me?"

Fourteen minutes left. I didn't mind the warmer weather when I woke up to scrape the ice off my car to get to work, but I did keep hearing on the nightly news that if this heat wave continued, the summer fire season would be terrible. Summer seemed a long way away from now, though, so I was just enjoying the ice free car. “Bored to tears yet?”

Biting down on her bottom lip, she gently rubs her growing stomach which seemed invisible until she turns slightly to the side as a smile graced her face. “Hello, mommy’s baby, wait until daddy sees you, I love you so much.” TO BE CONTINUED… P.S. Hello readers. If you are regular reader of books with werewolves/wolf shifters then you already know what heat is. To those who may be reading a book of this genre for the first time, I just want to give a little explanation. I want you to have a basic understanding before you continue reading so you won't be confused in the next chapter. Heat is basically a period of extreme arousal in female wolves. It's kind of like ovulation in human females where they are horny and moody and have other symtoms of PMS.

God fucking damn it! The weather only got worse as she plowed through the drifts. Her vision was reduced to a blanket of white outside of her limbs. She finally glanced back, unable to make out any sign of the beast behind her. Any slight hope his absence caused died when an off-key humming of “Paint it Black” came to her with the next freezing blast of wind.

Then, she rushed into the shower and scrubbed herself from head to toe until her skin went bright red from being rubbed raw. I chuckled to myself. So, even saints like Scarlet weren't immune to Betty's horrible scent attack! … After breakfast, I walked out of the house, planning to check out the nearby supermarkets first. But the moment I stepped outside, a warm blast of dry air hit me. The scorching heat intensified by the second, making the entire city feel like one enormous sauna. Yesterday's heat was nothing compared to that day's. I turned on my phone and saw that the heatwave was even trending on social media, with popular searches like "extreme high heat" making it to the top.

They were losing heat at a rate their metabolic systems couldn't match. "They're going into Thermal Shock," Sloane said, dragging a crate of emergency blankets from the ship. Her voice was the only thing that felt grounded in the chaos. "Kael, stop staring at the math and start moving. We need to build a 'Heat-Anchor' or half this district will be dead by sunset."
