Her thermoregulation system was already on the verge of collapse. The sky, which had been dark just moments ago, suddenly brightened. Heat waves rippled through the air. Even my insulated protective suit began to grow hot. My eyes widened as it hit me that tomorrow was the day the apocalyptic heat would fully erupt. Suppressing the instinct to rush back to my underground shelter, I forced myself to stay calm and turned to Janine. “There’s going to be an explosive temperature surge today,” I said steadily. “If you want to stay here, that’s your choice. But I’m going back.”

How was I still the same? I grabbed the pills and swallowed them with a long drink before laying down. Then I waited. I don’t know what for, maybe him? For sleep? Sleep never came, but the heat started slow, it was a flicker, then burst into flame. At first I thought it was the shower, the residual steam still clinging to my pores. But it didn’t fade. It only deepened and spread low in my belly like a wildfire. I shifted under the covers, then threw them off. But still hot. The fabric felt wrong against my skin, scratchy and unbearable. Like wearing wool in July. Like my nerves were on fire and everything touching them made it worse. I pulled at my shirt and fanned myself.

VALERIA’S POV A wave of heat rippled through my body, starting in my chest and radiating outward. I stumbled, clutching my stomach as the sensation intensified. It wasn’t the ordinary heat of a fever or exhaustion—it was alive, like fire coursing through my veins, burning hotter with every passing second. I gasped, falling to my knees. My hands trembled as I pressed them into the earth, the cool dirt doing nothing to ease the inferno inside me. My heart pounded erratically, each beat sending jolts of electricity through my limbs.

Anna's POV My chest heaves as I push the door of the hotel room and stride in. Being the mafia princess has it's good days and it's bad days, but today is an especially bad day, an enemy of my father's had attacked unexpectedly, making me run to this hotel with another enemy. “So many enemies” I huff as I peel the leather jacket off my burning hot body. In a rush, I go to stand in front of the air conditioner to cool myself, even though I know that the it cannot help the hotness I feel.
