I hadn't planned on meeting anyone today, least of all, a stranger at my door. "Hello neighbor, " she said, waving, her voice light and friendly. "I’m Lena, your neighbor. I stay just down the hall. I saw you move in just last week and thought I'd stop by to say hello and maybe introduce myself. I hope I’m not interrupting anything."

Thunder cracked overhead, close enough to make me flinch. Then the power went out. The apartment plunged into darkness, the hum of my laptop dying with a final sigh. I cursed softly, fumbling for my phone, then remembered it was dead too. Perfect. I’d barely found my torch when a sharp knock echoed through the apartment. I froze. Another knock. Slower this time. “Who is it?” I called, my voice barely steady. Silence. Then—low, calm, unmistakably male. “Hi. It’s your neighbor. We share a balcony.”

He's the one coming home from work while I'm just here at home! "H-Haven't had it yet," I replied uneasily. "Then I just made it in time! I bought us lunch," he said, lifting the bag in front of us, which I hadn't noticed before, containing our food. "You didn't mention that you were coming home..." I muttered softly. I immediately noticed how his mouth slightly opened in response to my answer. I scratched the back of my head. How was he supposed to tell me he was coming home? We don't have cellphones, and it's embarrassing to always ask our neighbor for favors.

I gave my friend a reassuring smile. From the corner of my eye I could just make out Aiden making his way towards us. "Hey there neighbor!" Aiden greeted bumping my shoulder with his playfully as he joined me and Skylar in the crowded college hallway. I had recently discovered that Aiden and Skylar were actually neighbors, he lived in the house just across the street. And now since I had moved in with Skylar he was my neighbor too. I gave him a warm smile, "Hey yourself." I responded bumping his shoulder back.

My breath got caught in my throat and I saw the last person I was expecting to see. There he was, standing with his hands in his pockets and a smile on his face. He was wearing a black singlet with jeans, his hair falling gracefully on his eyebrow. He looked at me, his gaze burning. "Hello, neighbor." I blinked my eyes rapidly, trying to register what I was seeing. He was my new neighbor?!
