Sighing in exasperation, I get down from my car and walk up to the imposing gate to look up at it. I don't have the slightest idea how to open it, and even if I did, I assume that it would be locked from the inside. This means that I have no other choice other than to call my father's stupid wife to come and open the gate for me. I head back to my car, cursing under the sweltering sun, which has my hair glued to my nape with sweat, even though I've spent only a minute or two under it. Inside the car is even hotter than outside it, now that it's not in motion. I can't afford to put on the AC, since it would consume more gas and gas is expensive as fuck.

For now, those worries were tucked away. She continued to talk with Duncan as they followed the mud track to the main road that ran through the village. As they stepped past the last few trees, the roar of dozens of engines greeted them long before the convoy of motorcycles and trucks appeared from afar. Before they even got close Eva knew they were Hellhounds. Dozens of men and women sporting the same aura as Daniel, dangerous, gruff, unrelenting. "Uh, are we being invaded?" As the echoes faded, the silver veins in the earth began to pulse faster, spreading outward like wildfire toward the Gate. The wind screamed through the gorge as Kaelen crested the ridge. The world below no longer looked like the valley he’d sworn to protect. The ground pulsed with veins of light, rivers of silver snaking between shattered stones. The air shimmered like molten glass, bending and breaking the rain into prisms. And at the center of it all stood the Gate—a colossal arch of fractured crystal half-buried in the mountain. Its surface rippled like water, reflecting skies that didn’t belong to this world.

"I am going to fucking kill you later, Hades, you fucking asshole!" Jinx was screaming as he tilted the helicopter to the side, trying to avoid a huge flying demon that wasn't interested in what it did to the invading toms on its way toward the gaping Hellgate. Jinx couldn’t spare even a glance to see if it got through. He was too busy focusing on what was in front of him.

The darkness in his eyes intensified as he trailed the knife over my skin teasingly. I couldn't stop trembling in utter terror.

I should have been flung out the other side by now, but the vortex is collapsing in slow motion, seconds stretching into eons. Instead of a clean break from the mystery, the descent back to Earth felt like falling into a storm of our own making.
