MISTRESS OF THE GAME
Moments later, in stepped a man who immediately drew my attention.
He was young, perhaps younger than I expected, with smooth light-brown skin and a well-groomed beard that outlined his jaw. His clothes were sharp, his shoes polished. His hair was trimmed perfectly, not a strand out of place. He carried himself with the ease of someone used to respect. His smile lit up the room as he looked toward Mrs. Tate.
“This must be her,” he said gently, his eyes landing on me. I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
Mrs. Tate walked over and placed a hand on my shoulder. “Victor, this is Marie. The little girl I told you about. Marie, this is my husband, Mr. Tate. From now on, he is your father.”
