Misty I land on my feet in a sea of mist. Silver fog snakes around my ankles, around my glimmering armour made of pure light. For a moment, I think I’m… lost within the aether–in the misty, shadowed undercurrent that separates our realm from the Goddess’s kingdom. But wet grass squishes beneath my boots as I stumble forward, breathless, damn near in pieces. Rain pelts the top of my head as I grope for anything to grab onto before I careen toward the ground.

They still had the police go straight to the mansion, but others were positioned at every corner, dressed in civilian clothes so they wouldn’t be noticed. Xander and I decided that only the two of us would go. We wore invisible micro Bluetooth earpieces given by Xander’s cousin so they could hear our conversation, and also GPS trackers so we could be located if anything wrong happened. We still had backup, but Loraine’s people wouldn’t notice them. We wouldn’t go into a battle unarmed. We knew Loraine — that woman is cunning.

The sound was a symphony to their ears, a melodious crescendo that set the stage for what was about to unfold. The trail led them to a part of the wilderness that was shrouded in mystery, hidden from the prying eyes of the world by a thicket of Aspen trees. As they moved closer, the trees parted like curtains on a stage, revealing a meadow that was bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun. The mist swallowed them whole, and the roar of the falls became a living, breathing entity that surrounded them. As they emerged on the other side, a breathtaking sight awaited them: an ancient temple, hidden behind the veil of the Shadowfalls, its entrance guarded by imposing stone statues with eyes that burned like embers. Eira's fingers danced across the rocky face behind the falls, tracing the subtle seams and crevices etched into the stone. Water droplets clung to her skin, glistening like tiny diamonds in the fading light. "There's a hidden entrance," she declared, her voice barely above a whisper.

Its eyes burned like molten gold, and its body was covered in patches of matted fur and oozing wounds.
