She dragged me by the hand. After Ashley shared the ice we took our place in front of the television looking for something to watch, I saw a message come in from doctor smith, but I didn't read it and after three or four calls I placed the phone on silent. I don't think I have enough ice cream courage to speak to him right now, nor after he probably gets an ear full from Mr. Knight.

I left. Then, I hid in the shadows and watched as a refined-looking middle-aged man approached Mom with Ally in his arms. I had no idea what they talked about, but Mom's face lit up with a smile. She ruffled Ally's hair affectionately, and the three of them walked off hand in hand.

I smiled. He nodded with satisfaction. As he turned toward the SUV, he paused one last time. “Oh…” I looked up. “One more thing.” He clicked his fingers . “Yes?” I raised a brow. He smiled faintly. “Sometimes…The people who smile the sweetest are the ones hiding the sharpest knives.” The words settled heavily inside my heart. Without another word, he climbed into the SUV and the engine came to life. I stood rooted to the spot as the vehicle slowly disappeared down the street.

"Hi. My name is Ethan Rivera, and I'm not here to tell you how to live. I'm here to tell you how I survived." The room quieted instantly. I smiled at her, like I didn’t just drop a bomb.

He didn't say a word for a while before finally speaking. “Why are you smiling like that?” He asked. I bit back a laugh. “Like what?” I asked with a grin. “Like you’re hiding something,” he said with a raised brow. I tilted my head slightly, folding my arms over my chest. “Maybe I am,” I replied with a smile.
