Hide Behind A Smile Novels & Stories

That familiar prickling sensation at the back of my neck. Like someone was watching me. I looked up, and there he was. Leaning casually against the railing of the upper floor, his arms folded, a slow, satisfied smile stretching across his face. John. His eyes locked into mine, and he didn't look away; instead, his smile broadened. That smile… it wasn't just amusement. It was calculation. And in that moment, it clicked. The whispers. The silence. He had orchestrated it. Again. My jaw tightened, my fingers curling into a fist at my side. I had walked right into it.

Erica said. Linda scoffed flinging her hair "you're just trying to cover up for that waitress and make her look innocent, I am not the bad person here you know." Erica was quiet, she took a deep sigh taking a long sip from the juice "really tasty, you should try it." "No thank you" Linda said shaking her head. She took a quick glance around and noticed that people were still staring at them, she smiled. Erica noticed she was smiling. "Why are you smiling?" She asked.

"Yes, I'll be your girlfriend. Yes, you can take care of us. Yes, Adam. Yes." The smile that broke across his face was not the thin, self-deprecating smile of the past week. It was not the controlled, professional smile of the CEO or the polite, distant smile of the man at the reception in Zurich. It was a real smile — wide and unguarded and almost painful in its intensity. The smile of a man who had been holding his breath for a decade and had finally been allowed to exhale.

Knowing them, you can't easily get under their skin. "We know that smile, asshole!" They said in unison, making me laugh. Well, they know me well. I guess I can't hide anything from these crazy people. "That smile must have been inspired, which is why you won!" I couldn't help but smile at them when Lennox said that. Well, there's always a reason behind my smile, and that reason is her. "You only wear that smile when it comes to Lara."

She always smiled, hiding all her pain behind her smiles. She never let the world know about his behavior with her, she hid it all too well.

He was facing behind me and smiling at the beautiful view here on the high line. "Yeah," I said and tried to keep my voice down so he wouldn't recognize me and simply hid my face in my hair. "Having a bad day?" he asks, "No, I'm really into black," I replied, but he just laughed and smiled when he looked at me. When he faced me, I turned in the other direction and hid my face.

I spoke. Their brows furrowed with a mix of relief and their concern for my safety evident. They had trusted in my ability to navigate the dangers outside the palace walls, and I was determined to live up to their expectations. "But how did you manage to stay hidden from him?" another voice chimed in, curiosity evident in her tone. I smiled, masking the weight of my unspoken secret. "Sometimes, the best way to hide is in plain sight," I replied, deliberately evading any further details. It was not a lie, but a carefully crafted response that shielded the truth.

So much more. It was like he didn’t want anyone to know he was more, though. He hid his depths from people, like a magician. Sleight of hand, trick of the eye, smoke and mirrors. He stood in front of the crowd, making a big production with colorful scarves and wands, and big black hats—or in his case, flirting egotistical smiles and inappropriate advances—while all the while he took your attention off what was really going on, right in front of your eyes, and concealed the very best parts of himself.

But inside the boardroom, everything had narrowed to warmth, breath, and the quiet mercy of not having to pretend. Eventually her breathing steadied. She remained against him longer than necessary. Neither of them mentioned it. When she finally spoke, her voice was muffled against his shirt. “I’m a mess.” “You’re human.” “I hate that you’re always right.” A low laugh moved through his chest beneath her cheek. “I’m a lawyer,” he said. “It’s my professional burden.” Despite everything, Katya smiled. Not the polite smile she used for investors. Not the cold smile she used for rivals.

While he was saying that word, his eyes seemed lifeless to her. While no one let go of their gaze, she thought. "I don't know if he's telling the truth because it's hard to read him. The expressions he shows on his face are different. People like me are even more deceived when people who hide something use that. Sadness is hidden when a person smiles. He may be showing me good things now, but maybe behind the scenes, he is not. I will be in even more trouble if I base it on what he is showing me. "
