A sharp sting pierces my skin, then nothing. I crack one eye open cautiously and realize the needle is already inside my arm while blood moves steadily through the tube beside me. See? That was unnecessarily traumatic for everyone involved. “Could you lie back for me, Mr. Blackwell?” the nurse asks gently, motioning toward the small bed beside me. “You’ll be here a few minutes, and some people feel dizzy watching the blood.” I almost tell her I am fine. Lacey sighed, “That’s so sweet.” A phlebotomist walked in with her tray of supplies and asked, “Are you ready to have your blood drawn?” I nodded, “Sure.” It took her a couple of tries before she was able to find a good vein, but she was eventually successful. As she was drawing blood into the glass vial, she asked, “When was the last time you drank water?” I replied, “Early this morning. I’ve been pretty busy today.”
